West Sioux wrestler Jose Montes had a 1-2 individual state tournament record competing at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines last week.
He lost his opening round match at the Class 1A individual state wrestling meet to Riley Klein of Underwood by a 12-6 decision.
Montes, 20-9 record, went to the consolation bracket on Feb. 14 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. He wrestled Dusty Decker of East Buchanan-Winthrop and bounced back with a win by pin in 2:53 against Decker.
On Friday, Ryan Cale of Cardinal Community, who went on to take fourth place, defeated Montes by pin in 3:37 in a consolation round wrestle back.
Montes had a 21-10 record for the season and a 1-2 tournament record at that time. Cale has a 36-9 record.
“He wrestled pretty decent. He came out flat in the first two periods of the opening match. He was up 6-1 in the second match but got caught. He came back a couple of hours later and stuck the third guy,” said West Sioux Coach Grant Van Beek.
Several Falcons wrestlers made the trip to Des Moines to watch Montes.
“They hopefully learned how much hard work and focus it takes and to compete in the freestyle tournaments,” said Van Beek.
