Just when people thought the local sports seasons were finished comes the most entertaining basketball game of the year.

The Akron-Westfield FFA is hosting a doubleheader donkey extravaganza this Friday night, March 1.

It’s basketball played on real live donkeys, and it will be wilder than a rodeo and funnier than a circus.

Leading the antics will be “Buckmaster, the world famous comedy donkey — 500 pounds of pure dynamite. He’s rough and tough and hard to bluff. Riders beware — he hasn’t been ridden yet. Buckmaster is just one of the donkeys in this fun-filled show, organized by Dairyland Donkey Ball LLC of Chippewa Falls, Wis.

All local players will be riding so come out and see someone you know try to ride a donkey and play basketball at the same time.

The teams are FFA Officers vs. Teachers/Community Members and High School Students vs. FFA Members:

• FFA Officers: Dana Hedlund, Adam Kroksh, Randy Kroksh, Emily Meerdink, Kellie O’Byrne, Kayla Tindall and Chet Willer. Their coach is Dominick Foley.

• Teachers/Community Members: Derek Briggs, Tracy Frerichs, Deb Hedlund, Amy Johnson, Kim Meerdink, Eric Walking stick, Dennis Wilken and Tina Wilken.

• High School Students: Katie Coyle, Daniel Dirks, Bethany Eastman, Spencer Frankl, Jordan Hansen, Katlyn Mace, Sam Mace, Kyle Schroeder, Jaclyn Smith and Anthony Strom.

• FFA Members: Ryan Foley, Kali Kriener, Cole Oltmanns, Desi Oltmanns, Sydney Pridie, Trevor Richter and Joe Welch.

A championship playoff game between the winning teams will determine this year’s champion.

Pooper Scoopers will be Shared Superintendent Randy Collins and Grades Preschool-6 Principal Cathy Bobier.

Announcers are High School Math Teacher Mike Baker and former Hometowner AFWT columnist Jay Miller.

Before the games start, the Akron-Westfield FFA will be serving a tailgate supper of pizza, bars and drinks. They will begin serving at 6 p.m. in the “McDonalds Area” outside the new gymnasium off the main school entrance.

The games begin at 7 p.m. in the Akron-Westfield new gymnasium.

To purchase game tickets before game night, call FFA Advisor Randy Kroksh at 712-568-2020 or 712-551-6360. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.

All of the proceeds will be for the benefit of FFA scholarships and activities.
