Salker advances to state free throw contest

A West Sioux student from Ireton won the 12-year-old girls’ division of the regional Knights’ Free Throw Competition held Feb. 24 at Remsen-St. Mary’s.

Samantha Salker advanced to the state competition, which will be March 17.

On Feb. 17, district qualifiers vied for the right to continue in the Knights of Columbus Free Throw shooting competition.

Advancing after the competition at West Sioux High School were Breyden Bieren of Rock Rapids, Hayden Heimensen of Rock Rapids, Kiely Metzger of Rock Rapids, Hunter Dekkers of Hawarden, Madys Grotewild of Larchwood, Alexis Gazafy of Ireton, Sam Salker of Ireton, Brandt Bekhout of Rock Rapids, Jake Lynott of Hawarden and Parker Metzger of Rock Rapids.

Two Ireton girls finished in first place: Sam Salker in the girls’ 12-year-old division and West Sioux eighth grader Alexis Gazafy, who didn’t place at regionals.

Local second place winners included Jaden Harris of Akron, girls’ 11-year-old division; Sam Mullinix of Akron, boys’ 10-year-old division; and Emily Hulshof of Hawarden, girls’ 10-year-old division. She finished second.

The free throw event is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawarden. Knights’ members served as counters.
