Small wins academic honor from NAIA

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) released its Daktronics 2013 women’s basketball scholar athlete list and three Northwestern College players earned the academic honor.

Junior Mackenzie Small of Hinton is a first time recipient of the honor. She is the daughter of Joel and Sandy Small and granddaughter of Jim and Edie Small of Akron.

Also gaining the honor from the Red Raiders were senior Kendra De Jong of Hospers and junior Samantha Kleinsasser of Huron, S.D.

In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and musty have achieved junior academic status to qualify for this honor.

In total 178 Division II Women’s Basketball student-athletes are Daktronics 2013 NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Davenport (Mich.), Morningside College of Sioux City, Olivet Nazerene (Ill.), Rochester (Mich.), Saint Mary (Kan.) and Tennessee Wesleyan tied for the lead with five honorees.
