Sioux County deputies arrest several on alcohol charges

On March 10, at 3:43 a.m., a Sioux County Sheriff’s deputy discovered a vehicle that was stuck in a farm field near the intersection of Harrison Avenue and Iowa Highway 10, four miles west of Orange City.

Upon further investigation the deputy determined there were four people under the age of 21 consuming alcohol inside the vehicle.

Amber Mace, 19 of Hawarden, and Taylor Lariviere, 18 of Le Mars, were cited for possession of alcohol under the legal age. Mario Rassel, 22 of Hawarden, was arrested for two counts of supplying alcohol to minors. The driver, Tabitha Gries, 19 of Le Mars, was cited for failure to maintain control and possession of alcohol under the legal age.

In another incident:

On Saturday, March 10, at 8:44 p.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident on 420th Street, two miles northeast of Hawarden.

Warren Vargo, 66 of Hawarden, was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Venture van westbound on 420th Street when he lost control of the vehicle, entered the north ditch, striking a fence and a Northwest Rural Electric Cooperative (NREC) utility pole.

John Finley, 24; a 3-year-old; an 8-month old; a 6-year-old and an 8-year-old and Brianna Vargo, age 16; Sandy Vargo, 28, all of Hawarden, were transported to the Hawarden Regional Healthcare by the Hawarden Ambulance for treatment of their injuries. John Finley and the 3-year-old were later transported to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., by the Hawarden Ambulance for additional treatment.

The Chevrolet sustained about $4,500 in damages. The fence sustained about $300 in damages and the utility pole sustained about $1,000 in damages.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Hawarden Fire Department, the Hawarden Ambulance, Hawarden Police Department and Northwest REC.

During the recent winter storm, Friday night, March 8 lasting through Monday, March 11, the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office received increased calls for accidents and motorists assists.

There were 39 stranded motorists and vehicles; seven motor vehicle property damage accidents and two motor vehicle personal injury accidents.

On March 12, at 4:00 p.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident on Eagle Avenue, four miles north of Ireton.

Joseph Bouwman, 19 of Rock Valley, was driving a 2003 Ford Expedition northbound on Eagle Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle, entered the west ditch and entered a creek.

No injuries were reported.

The Ford sustained about $4,000 in damages.

Bouwman was cited for failure to maintain control of a vehicle.
