The Discovergarten, Kindergarten, and First Grade classes of Akron Westfield were one of this year’s recipients of the Akron Community Foundation Grant.
The teachers involved in these classrooms meet weekly in a Professional Learning Community (PLC) to improve classroom instruction and student achievement.
During their meeting the PLC members share classroom experiences and activities, strategies for optimal learning, and materials they use to meet their goals.
It was determined by the PLC that an area needing emphasis was math. Therefore, they pursued additional funding from the grant.
The materials purchased are being used to enhance these students’ understanding of mathematical concepts. The teachers’ goal is to continually increase their students’ math proficiency levels.
The grant that was received will affect 130 students in Grades DK-1.
