It’s a slower start to the 2013 golf season thanks to a chilly March.
“We haven’t been able to get out on the course yet. It’s not open yet. As area courses open up, teams will be able to go full gear,” said Akron-Westfield Head Coach Todd Colt.
The Westerners have nine on the girls’ team and 16 on the boys’ squad.
The 2013 Akron-Westfield Boys’ Golf team consists of Tavian Banks, Kevin Carlson, Kelton Coyle, Damien Doescher, Cory Eskra, Alex Foley, Dominick Foley, Spencer Frankl, Chance Gant, Wyatt Heyl, Jacob Neubrand, Michael O’Byrne, Taylor James, Jonathan Twohig and Tyler Waterbury.
Senior boys back from a seventh-place at state Class 1A meet last year are Cory Eskra, Taylor James and Dominick Foley. Eskra placed seventh individually at state and was First Team All-War Eagle Conference.
The Lady Westerners’ golf team consists of Jacynda Banks, Katie Black, Dana Hedlund, Kourtney Hedlund, Sam Johnson, Chelby Minor, Ryleigh Schnell, Kayla Tindall and Cali Westergard.
Girls back from a regional qualifying squad are letter-winning juniors Dana Hedlund, Jacynda Banks and Kayla Tindall.
The Westerners’ opener scheduled for April 1 at Akron Golf Course against Gehlen Catholic was postponed to April 19 and a meet April 2 against Unity Christian will be April 16.
Remsen Union visits for a boys’ match and Sergeant Bluff-Luton for a girls’ match April 8. Matches begin at 4:30 p.m.
A good week of weather is all it takes to get the season started, said Colt.
