For the third straight year West Sioux Vocal Jazz Choir emerged as champions of the Class 1A state competition.
The Falcons edged out Audubon which finished second and Akron-Westfield which took third place.
The 2013 Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships, run by Comprehensive Sound Systems, took place March 26 at Ballard High School in Huxley.
“You don’t know how you’ll do going in. All the groups are good. We were keeping our fingers crossed as they read off the names (for team scores) and were pretty pumped when we won,” said West Sioux Vocal Music Director Jim Gullikson.
West Sioux sang “Shadow of Your Smile” with seniors Rachel Nilson, Austin Hultquist and Cristine Bronkhorst as soloists; “Over the Rainbow” with soloist seniors Tori McKee and Andrea Shoemaker; and “Frim Fram Sauce.”
Sopranos of the group are Nilson, McKee, senior Courtney Hummel and junior Katrina Coffield.
Singing alto are Bronkhorst, Shoemaker, senior Bailey VanDenBerg and sophomore Amber Harry.
Tenors are freshman Jacob Bushby, sophomores Antonio Topete and Shania Marienau.
Bass singers of the group are seniors Steven Marienau, Austin Hultquist and Justin Stoltenburg.
Senior Maddy Eilts was the keyboard bass accompaniment.
