There are 28 students participating in the Akron-Westfield boys’ track and field team coached by Kent Johnson.
Seniors are Daniel Beitelspacher, Fernando Sanchez, Jesse Jolin, Garrett Wall, Kyle Schroeder and Daniel Dirks.
Juniors are Scott Garrett, Trystan Hageman, Trevor Hansen, Cody Bosse, Arron Green, John Wolthuizen, Sam Mace, Chance Hoffman and Nathan Sanchez.
Sophomores are Anthony Strom, Anthony Fountoulakis, Devon Myers, Michael Peinke, Dylan Blinde, Joe Welch and Alex Wilken.
Freshmen are Kane Lininger, Shawn Taylor, Caleb Colt, Zach Bosse, Spenser Wardrip and Matt Toben.
The Westerners prepared for the April 1 season opening but it was cancelled. Most of the preseason preparation has been indoors as this spring has really been a “late winter.”
“Goals would be to put together a team that can fill out each event and be competitive at the event. We have many new members, and it is too early to tell which individuals will be competing where,” said A-W boys track and field Coach Kent Johnson.
“Having 28 on the team is always good for a small school. We have five or six kids per class. We hope to get outside soon,” said Johnson.
Last season Wall placed 10th at the State Boys’ Track and Field Meet in the 3,200-Meter Run with a time of 10:27.75. The Westerners’ 4 x400 Relay Team of Dirks, Blinde, Dylan Myers and Chance Klemme had a time of 1:04.04 and finished fourth in their heat.
The War Eagle Conference indoor meet set for March 11 at Dordt College in Sioux Center and the April l track meet at Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn were cancelled.
A-W is at at Kingsley-Pierson in Kingsley April 8 and Hinton on April 18 in early-season meets.
