Morningside College unleashed a 12-hit offensive attack in a 9-2 non-conference baseball victory against Dakota State University April 8 in Madison, S.D.
Derek Appley, a junior from Akron, was the starting pitcher for the Mustangs.
The win was the third in a row for the Mustangs and their fourth triumph in the last five games to raise their record to 14-18. A contest with the same two teams was cancelled April 11 in Sioux City.
Against Dakota State, Morningside took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning on RBI doubles by A.J. Staiert and Tanner ONeill and a RBI single by Keaton Rowe.
The Mustangs staged another three-run inning in the fourth to go up 6-1. Adison Gillett had the only hit of the inning with a RBI single.
Cole Halgerson and Staiert each had a double and single, while Britt Anderson had two hits and three RBIs. Gillett also had two hits. Rowe, Josh Gross and Trevor Miller all had singles.
John Russell allowed one unearned run on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts in a three-inning relief stint for his first career Morningside win. Lance Spongberg struck out five batters and pitched three hitless innings of scoreless relief for a save.
Appley allowed one run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Dakota State game was the second start for Appley in a week for Morningside. The Mustangs lost a 10-6 game to Bellevue he started on April 1.
