Robert “Bob” Vreugdenhil, 81

Robert “Bob” Vreugdenhil, 81, of Alcester, SD, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 20 at Peace Lutheran Church in Alcester. Reverend Garen Pay will officiate. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Akron, with military rites conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2013, with the family present after 5:30 p.m., and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at the church. Robert “Bob” Vreugdenhil was born September 27, 1931, in Union County, South Dakota, the son of William and Anna (Langdon) Vreugdenhil. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Iowa. He attended West Union Country School in Union County and later high school in Akron. He graduated from Akron High School in 1950.

He was united in marriage to Sally Dobbert on November 23, 1952, in Le Mars. Just two weeks after their marriage, Bob was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed in Japan while serving his country during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged.

Following his service, he began his lifelong career as a farmer, first in Plymouth County, Iowa and later in Union County, South Dakota. Bob raised crops and fed cattle for many years. Over the last year, Bob’s health began to fail and for the past three months, he has been a resident of the Akron Care Center.

Bob was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Alcester; having served as Congregation President, Elder, and Sunday School Superintendent. He was a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron and the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 6149 for many years. He served three terms on the Farmers Coop Board in Akron and several years on the Spink Township (SD) Board. Through the years, he and Sally enjoyed traveling. He also enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Sally of Alcester; their children: Jean (Rev. Scott) Lemmermann of Raytown, MO, Charles (Marlys) Vreugdenhil of Akron, and Janet (Craig) Knutson of Mitchell, SD; 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; a sister: Marianne (Elden) Earlley of Wilsonville, NE; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers: Max Vreugdenhil, Dennis Vreugdenhil, and Gene Vreugdenhil in infancy; and 2 sisters: Joyce Clark and Hope Vreugdenhil in infancy.

Casket Bearers will be his grandchildren: Jennifer Copenhaver, Kristen Knock, Jeremy Knutson, Matthew Knutson, Nichole Knutson, Jason Vreugdenhil, Aaron Lemmermann, Luke Knutson, and Hannah Lemmermann.

Honorary Casket Bearers: Brad Vreugdenhil, Jay Miller, Bill Joseph, and Gorman Nygard.
