With two teams each seated four at a table, War Eagle Conference Quiz Bowl teams competed to answer questions ranging from Algebra to novels and World History on a rainy Saturday morning at West Sioux High School.
West Sioux team members on the varsity squad were Elsie Wakeman, Carissa Anderson, Brian Lauter, Tyler Kelly, Augie Jimenez and Ricardo Rodriquez.
The annual WEC meet at West Sioux was coordinated by Falcons teacher Ryan Vander Lugt, who kept score from all the rounds. All WEC teams except Akron-Westfield and Remsen Union competed, and the meet wrapped up the Quiz Bowl season.
“I was very happy with this group. We competed in three WEC meets and finished fifth,” said Vander Lugt.
West Sioux beat Hinton by a 410-170 score in one round.
“I was happy my teammates made me choose chemistry,” said West Sioux senior Wakeman, adding the match went well with one of the highest West Sioux scores.
Students buzz in when they have what they think is the right answer. A moderator reads the questions, in the case of the Hinton and West Sioux match, it was Gehlen Catholic Teacher and Coach Mike Meyer.
Some parents attended but there was no cheering in the room, except for an occasional high-five tap of hands.
West Sioux’s season prior to its March 9 WEC meet was highlighted by fifth-place finishes at South O’Brien and Boyden-Hull hosted meets.
Final results showed Unity Christian taking first place honors; Gehlen Catholic was second; West Sioux third and Hinton, fourth at the varsity level.
At the JV level, the “Allstars,” comprised of West Sioux, Unity Christian, Gehlen Catholic and Remsen-St. Mary’s athletes, came in first, Gehlen Catholic was second, South O’Brien third and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn was in fourth place.
