Spring returned just in time to save the track and field season, starting with the West Sioux co-ed meet on April 24.

Highlights for the Lady Falcons and the Falcons were some quality efforts but both host teams were stymied by eight days off for the girls and 22 days off for the boys due to weather.

Boys’ Highlights

The West Sioux boys had a fifth place finish from the 4 x 200-Meter Relay team of Justin Negaard, Mitch Schlumbohm, Mason Ericson and Jesus Rivera. Their time was 1:44.16 for two team points.

The Distance Medley Relay of Rivera, Ericson, Negaard and Devin Mandicino placed fifth with a time of 4:24.71.

“We did not improve our times; it is something we need to work on. We weren’t able to get outside much for practice,” said West Sioux Boys’ Coach Clint McKee.

Justin Stoltenburg did a good job in the Long Jump for a first timer with a leap of 15 feet 8 inches, he said.

In the field events, Trevor Ericson placed 13th in the Discus Throw with a heave of 83 feet 8.5 inches and Mason Ericson was seventh with a throw of 102 feet 11.5 inches, just missing earning team points.

Rivera placed eighth in the 100-Meter Dash with a time of 12.93 seconds.

Mandacino had a time of 1:01.26 for a ninth place effort. Stoltenberg placed 11th in the 400-Meter Dash in 1:01.87.

Schlumbohm was 10th in the 200-Meter Dash with a time of 27.18 seconds and Austin Hultquist was 12th with a time of 28.18.

The Falcons finished eighth as a team with five points. Team standings were Sioux Center, 163; West Lyon, 145; Boyden-Hull-Rock Valley, 104; Central Lyon, 45; Remsen Union 44; George-Little Rock, 29; Sioux Center Junior Varsity 16; and West Lyon JV, 2.

Girls’ Highlights

Rylee Negaard had a solid meet including participating in a new event for her, placing in the Shot Put with a throw of 25 feet 11 inches.

“She had not thrown the shot before but finished fifth. She’s got talent. It’s been a struggle to practice without being able to get outside,” said Girls’ Coach Dennis Weerheim.

Negaard had a sixth-place finish in the 100-Meter Dash with a time of 14.66 seconds and she was fifth in the 200-Meter Dash with a time of 29.73 seconds.

Callie Schmidt finished eighth with a time of 15.69. Schmidt also placed in the 100-Meter Hurdles with a time of 22.11 seconds.

Freshman Amanda Mace ran in a new race for her, the 1,500-Meters Run, which she finished eighth with a time of 6:31. She also finished eighth in the 400-Meter Dash with a time of 1:15.77. Mace ended seventh in the 800-Meter Run with a time of 2:59.16.

The Lady Falcons had three team points. Team standings were Sheldon 143; West Lyon, 112; Central Lyon, 110; Le Mars JV, 88; Remsen Union, 70; and George Little Rock, 50.

West Sioux hosted the War Eagle Conference girls’ and boys’ meets on April 30. Its last cancelled meet was at West Lyon April 23.

West Sioux will host another co-ed meet May 2 and they will host the girls and boys State Qualifying Meets on May 9.

The State Track and Field Meets will be May 16 – 18 in Des Moines.
