Three runner-up finishes led the Akron-Westfield boys’ track and field team’s efforts at the War Eagle Conference meet April 30 at West Sioux.
A-W finished the meet with 55.33 points for fourth place of 10 boys’ teams competing.
A-W’s teams will head back to West Sioux’s track May 9 to vie in the State Qualifying Meet, which starts at 4:00 p.m. The State Track and Field Meet in Des Moines is May 16-18.
At the WEC meet the A-W boys’ Shuttle Hurdle Relay team of Sam Mace Dylan Blinde, Daniel Dirks and Chance Hoffman finished second to South O’Brien with a time of 1:05.93.
Garrett Wall and Hinton’s Drew Schiltz battled in two distance races with Schiltz edging out Wall in both for first place. Schiltz had a time of 4:54.07 in the 1600-Meter Run to Wall’s 5:03.10. In the 3200-Meter Run, Schiltz’s 10:27.02 nipped Wall’s time of 10:31.84.
The Akron-Westfield boys’ 4×400 Relay Team that finished in fifth place was Nathan Sanchez, Shawn Taylor, Cody Bosse and Garrett Wall. They finished fifth with a time of 4:03.96.
The 4×200 Relay was Sanchez, Chance Hoffman, Daniel Beitelspacher and Bosse for the Westerners who finished in third place behind South O’Brien and Hinton. A-W’s time was 1:40.00.
The 4×100 Relay was Bosse, Sam Mace, Hoffman and Sanchez. The Westerners were second to South O’Brien. The Westerners’ time was 47.0 to South O’Brien’s 46.88.
Beitelspacher took home a sixth place finish in the 100-Meter Dash with a time of 12:02 seconds.
Westerner Dylan Blinde added a sixth-place effort in the 110-Meter Hurdles with a time of 1:02.95.
The Boys’ Distance Medley Relay team was fourth with a time of 4:05.42.
In the field events, Devon Myers was fourth in the Long Jump with an effort of 17 feet 9.5 inches. Jesse Jolin was sixth with a leap of 17 feet 5.25 inches.
Final team scores at the 34th WEC Track and Field Meet were South O’Brien, 149.33 points; Hinton, 118; Unity Christian, 99; Akron-Westfield, 55.33; Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, 50; Remsen Union, 28; Gehlen Catholic, 24; Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, 18.33; Spalding Catholic, 15; and West Sioux, 1.
