Akron-Westfield had a fifth-place score of 337 at the Class 1A District Golf Meet at Spencer on May 16 and did not make the top two teams which advance to the State Class 1A Golf Tournament.
Senior Cory Eskra had the best Westerners’ score with a 40 front nine and 39 second nine holes for a 79. Senior Taylor James shot a 44 and 41 for an 85; sophomore Tavian Banks, 41, 44, 85; sophomore Kevin Carlson 43, 45, 88; senior Dominick Foley, 43, 48, 91 and junior Alex Foley, 49, 52, 101.
Eskra’s 79 put him in seventh place overall but the senior missed the top five and final individual qualifying spot by two shots. James’ and Banks’s 85s were good for a tie for 24th.
“We played as well as we’ve played all year. Remsen Union, West Sioux and Hinton beat us in the regular season and the War Eagle Conference tournament and we scored better than they did,” said A-W Coach Todd Colt.
Eskra had a solid round but ran into trouble in his “short game” on the greens, said Colt. “Sometimes you hit the ball well and score well but sometimes you hit the ball well but don’t score well,” said Colt.
The 85 was a season low for Banks.
“It is a very difficult course for high school players, and the competition was at a high level,” said Colt.
Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Ty Hanna was the meet medalist with a score of 72. The Generals won the team championship with a score of 316. They were followed by West Lyon’s 323 to earn the second state team qualifying spot. Bishop Garrigan of Algona shot a 327 for third and Woodbury Central of Moville edged A-W for fourth with a 329. West Sioux followed the Westerners with a 340. Hinton shot 342 for seventh, Remsen Union, 344; Laurens-Marathon, 347; Newell-Fonda, 351; North Iowa, 366; and Graettinger-Terril, 380.
