James “Jim” Ulatowski Jr., of Akron formerly of Streetsboro, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

A Celebration of Life will be after 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 31 at Jim’s home, 21285 K-18 North, near Akron. Military rites conducted by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars will be at 7:00 p.m. The Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel is in charge of arrangements. James Ernest Ulatowski Jr. was born May 11, 1948, in Cleveland Ohio, the son of James Sr. and Edna (Hohne) Ulatowski. James enlisted in the United states Marine Corp in September of 1966, and served his country during the Vietnam War. He was promoted to Sergeant, and bravely fought two tours in Vietnam. For his service, he was awarded a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/device, Vietnam Service Medal w/5*, Combat Action Medal, Rifle Marksmanship Badge, and he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in January of 1970, at which time he joined the Marine Corps Reserve. Sergeant James E. Ulatowski was honorably discharged in June, 1978.

Jim was united in marriage to Helen Gomula on September 5, 1970, in Ohio. Along his life’s journey he was employed by Western Electric in Solon, Ohio, The Window Factory in Oakwood, Ohio, and retired from Temple Inland in his home town of Streetsboro, Ohio. In May of 2010, he and Helen purchased Hummer’s Roadhouse in Westfield. Jim was currently operating Hummer’s with the help of family, and many close friends who continue to help beyond his passing.

Jim was a family man, and a people person. With his friends and family he enjoyed fishing, hunting, throwing horseshoes and “treasure” hunting. His daughter was recently quoted as describing her father as “The Green Mile.” He lived his life selflessly and humbly. He was patient and kind. For all he loved, he will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife of over 42 years, Helen of Akron; His mother Edna (Hohne) Ulatowski of Lake Placid, FL; his children James Gomula of Streetsboro, OH, Michael (Heather) Ulatowski of Burton OH, Joseph (Michelle) Ulatowski of Streetsboro, OH, and Lori Ulatowski (Mike McManus) of Streetsboro OH; 13 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; his siblings: Harley (Dawn) Ulatowski of Medina, OH, Mary (Ken) Hall of Valleyview, OH, Edward Ulatowski of Aurora, OH, Sue Pezak of Solon, OH, and Kenneth (Mary) Ulatowski of Akron, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Ulatowski Sr.
