After 24 years on the job, Julie Miller is look forward to sewing, reading and travelling following a career as manager at the Hawarden Casey’s General Store.
Regular customers, fellow staff members and area corporate representatives thanked Miller for her years of service to Casey’s on May 30. She has worked at both Casey’s locations in Hawarden as well as supervising operations.
“I worked at our previous location for a year, then supervised at about 10 locations for 10 years. I went back to being a manager at the old store in 2003, ” said Miller. “My store is always open.”
Miller will join husband, Terry, at home as both are now retired.
“I’ll be able to watch the news at 10:00 p.m. if I can stay up that late. I’m usually here by 3:00 a.m.,” said Miller.
“I tried to get things done in the office today but people kept coming up and congratulating me,” she said.
Casey’s moved to its present location on Iowa Highway 12 in November 2008. Last fall the store went to a 24-hours-a-day operation.
The Millers plan to travel much in retirement as they have a trailer in Milford.
Terry, a retired postal employee, and Julie have lived in Hawarden for 28 years. Julie VerHoeven-Miller grew up in Akron and is an alumni of Akron High School. She worked in the home health field before starting to work at Casey’s General Store in 1989.
“I have an embroidery machine at home and now I can sew,” said Julie with a smile. “I can read a magazine now.”
