The West Sioux softball team headed to a battle with unbeaten Akron-Westfield by snaring a close win in a War Eagle Conference game against South O’Brien.

A game winning RBI walk by Jenna Rehder in the seventh inning gave the Lady Falcons an 8-7 win over South O’Brien June 5 in Ireton.

South O’Brien scored five runs in the second inning and two more in the seventh.

WS made it a 5-2 Wolverines’ lead in its fifth as Calena Topete walked, Bailey VanDenBerg singled for an RBI and moved on to third on a passed ball and scored on a fielder’s choice by Jaylen Blankenship.

In the sixth, Carissa Anderson singled, stole second base, Luci Topete walked, and Callie Peterson singled to score Anderson. Rehder had an RBI single to score Luci Topete. Amanda Mace’s fielder’s choice scored Peterson, who had moved up to third on a wild pitch.

SOS made it a 7-5 lead in the seventh inning on a triple, double and single.

The Lady Falcons were not to be denied as they gained their fourth win of the season.

Blankenship started the rally with a single, Rylee Negaard singled and Anderson walked. Luci Topete came through with an RBI single as did Peterson. Rehder’s walk to score Anderson ended the contest.

“The girls had a rough second inning, allowing five runs but we kept battling back by being patient at the plate and getting solid hits. Very solid defense again. The girls never gave up,” said West Sioux Coach Cindy Koopmans.
