Remsen Union took advantage of Akron-Westfield’s miscues and handed the Westerners an 8-2 War Eagle Conference baseball loss on June 12.
The Rockets scored five runs in the third inning and three in the seventh inning. A-W had a four-error night.
On offense the Westerners batted against a tough Rockets’ hurler but closed the gap to 5-2 with two runs in their sixth inning. Cole Oltmanns walked with one out and scored on an RBI double by Cory Eskra. Eskra then scored on an RBI double by Chet Willer.
Gregg Taylor momentarily reached first on a single but was later called out after the umpires conferred. But it was a six-run game so that call did not matter much.
Also for the A-W offense, Caleb Colt got a single as did Jacob Neubrand and Spencer Frankl. Oltmanns also reached on an error.
Rocket Cam Kuchel struck out 10 Westerners and allowed only one walk.
A-W lost for the second straight game (after a 5-0 loss to Hinton June 10) and slipped to an 8-4 record with the WEC loss. Remsen Union improved to a 7-4 record.
Oltmanns had one walk and scored one run.
Eskra was 1-for-3 with one runs scored and one double.
Willer was 1-for-3 with a double.
Gregg Taylor, Colt, Neubrand and Frankl were 1-for-3.
The Westerners had six hits and one walk.
Willer pitched for seven innings, giving up nine hits and three walks and struck out four.
A-W will host Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in WEC play at 6:00 p.m., June 21. The Westerners are at the Hinton baseball tournament June 22.
Next week A-W is at Remsen-St. Mary’s on June 24 and will host Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn on June 26. Game times are 6:00 p.m.
