West Sioux’s softball team advanced to the second round of the Remsen Class 1A post-season regional tournament with a 4-0 win over Trinity Christian of Hull July 8 in Ireton.

Senior Courtney Hummel pitched a complete game and allowed just one Tigers hit and two walks. She registered eight strikeouts and the defense played well behind her efforts.

With the win the Lady Falcons improved to 12-15 overall and faced Remsen Union in the district tournament July 10.

It was a close contest with the four-win Tigers (4-17 final record) who will be in the War Eagle Conference this fall.

WS broke through with a three-run fourth inning after Hunmel and Trinity’s Rochelle Kooiker had matched out-for-out.

Catcher Rylee Negaard doubled to lead off the key fourth inning for the home team. Carissa Anderson singled. Luci Topete then brought in both with a two-run double. Cali Peterson scored Luci Topete with an RBI single. After an out Calena Topete’s RBI single completed the inning’s scoring as Peterson tallied. There was only one out but the Tigers executed a pick-off play and a ground out ended the frame.

“Getting that first hard hit helped. That’s the goal, to go on,” said West Sioux Coach Cindy Koopmans.

Trinity had a one-out walk in its fifth inning but Hummel got a strikeout and a nice catch from Peterson on a fly ball.

The Lady Falcons added another run in the fifth inning.

Leadoff hitter Jaylen Blankenship doubled with one out. Negaard then put down a perfect infield hit and Blankenship scored all the way from second base for a 4-0 lead.
