West Sioux freshman Porter Hummel fired a two hitter and struck out nine Akron-Westfield hitters as the Falcons shutout the Westerners, 2-0, in War Eagle Conference play July 2 in Hawarden.
The Falcons gained their sixth win of the season.
A-W slipped to 11-10 overall with the loss. Chet Willer had both of the A-W hits, spoiling Hummel’s no-hit bid.
West Sioux took a 1-0 lead in its third inning as Hummel walked with one out. Jesus Rivera singled and Justin Negaard delivered the game-winning RBI, a double. A-W got the final two outs to end the inning without any more scoring.
Willer singled in the fourth for his second hit and stole second and third but Hummel got a strikeout to end the inning. He also singled in the seventh inning but a double play ended the game.
Jordan Monsma singled in the West Sioux fourth and later scored an insurance run on an error.
Kezden Blankenship was 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one walk for the Falcons.
Hummel walked three times, had two stolen bases and scored a run.
Rivera was 1-for-2 with one walk.
Negaard was 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
Monsma was 2-for-3 with one run scored.
The Falcons, 6-14 overall record, had five hits, four stolen bases and five walks.
Jacob Neubrand got the start for the Westerners’ pitching and Caleb Colt came in after just one-third of an inning but the Westerners got out of a bases-loaded jam.
A-W was at Remsen Union July 8; hosted Sioux Center July 10 in non-conference play and has a make-up game with Remsen – St. Mary’s on July 11 which will conclude the regular season. A-W battles Kingsley-Pierson at Woodbury Central of Moville’s district at 7:00 p.m., July 16 in Class 1A playoffs. The winner plays at 7:00 p.m. July 18 in Moville.
