Randall Waterbury heads for home to score for the Rebel against the Red Sox.

The Akron Rebels baseball team rallied for an 8-7 win over Vermillion, S.D., Red Sox on July 2 for a 13-3 overall record.

A two-out eighth inning rally won the game for the Rebels at Sargent Field. Tanner Bundy, Jordan Heyl and Mike Davenport all got walks to load the bases. Randall Waterbury then delivered a two-run single to score Bundy and Heyl to win the game.

“It was a good ball game. They’re a tough team with a lot of Morningside College and Briar Cliff University players,” said Rebels’ coach Paul Martin.

The Red Sox had a one-out single in their ninth inning and A-W alumni Derek Appley reached on a fielder’s choice before a fly out ended the game. Appley reached on an error twice, singled and had the fielder’s choice and struckout.

The Red Sox took a 5-4 lead after two innings and led 7-6 into the later innings.

The Rebels gained a 2-2 tie in the first on a walk by Davenport; a hit-by-pitch by Waterbury; a two-out walk to Chad Brown and an RBI single by winning pitcher Brett Stolpe.

Scott Jacobs had an RBI single in the second inning to score Davenport, who had singled. Noah Bohlmann singled and later scored when Brown reached on an error and it was 5-5 after two innings.

Brown walked and later scored the tieing run in the fourth. Adam Loutsch singled and Bundy had an RBI double for a 6-5 Rebels’ lead.

The Red Sox regained the lead with two sixth inning runs to make it 7-6.

The Rebels had a chance to tie in the seventh as Waterbury reached on a two-base error, Bohlmann doubled but Waterbury was thrown out at home plate.

But the Rebels had a late-game rally in them the next inning for the hard-fought win.
