Larry Johnson was born May 27, 1936, in Union County, South Dakota, an only child, to parents Robert and Dorothy (Johnson) Johnson. He died surrounded by his family July 15, 2013 in Alcester, SD at the age of 77 years, one month and 18 days. Memorial services will be 10 a.m.Thursday, July 18 at Big Springs Baptist Church, rural Alcester.
He was raised in the Alcester area attending country school and graduated from Alcester High School before going to a technical school in Springfield, SD. He served in the Iowa National Guard when he lived in Sioux City, IA. Larry married Lorine Kay Hagen on May 11, 1956. They moved the family to a farm near Alcester in the early 1960s. He farmed for many years and also worked as the service manager at Dirk’s Motors in Akron, IA.
Larry was a member of the Lions club, a past president of the SD Pork Producers and liked bowling and golfing. Being an active member of Big Springs Baptist Church was an important part of Larry’s life. He was a deacon, church chair and choir director. His great voice had him singing in various community and church functions. He and Lorine made a mission trip to Cebu City in the Philippines.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lorine; a daughter, Leisa Jensen; five grandchildren, Jeremie Johnson, Amanda Jensen, Racheal Jensen, Jonathan Jensen and Bennie Jensen and one great-grandson, Dane Myhr.
Larry is survived by his son, Loren (Pam) Johnson of Rochester, MN; daughter, Lori (Lee) Johnson of Sioux Falls; son-in-law, Curtis (Karen) Jensen of Dubuque, IA; 10 grandchildren, Sheryl (Brent) Konz, Abby (Dan) Sandberg, Beda Johnson, Luke (Stacey) Johnson, Lonnie Johnson and his fiancée Kate, Lynise (Mike) John, Elizabeth (Dirk) Myhr, Charlotte Jensen, Nicholas Jensen and Cristopher Jensen, and eight great-grandchildren.
