In a schedule change the Akron Rebels baseball team welcomed Vermillion’s Red Sox, featuring area collegiate players, to Sargent Field July 9.
The Red Sox gained revenge for an earlier loss to the Rebels with a 9-5 win. The Rebels’ record stood at 12-4.
A game originally scheduled at Irene July 9 was postponed, no makeup announced yet.
The Rebels gained a 1-1 tie in the first as Randall Waterbury walked and later scored. Scott Jacobs singled and both moved up on a sacrifice by Noah Bohlmann. Chad Brown came through with an RBI single.
After the Red Sox took a 3-1 lead in the third, the Rebels tied it up again. Jordan Heyl reached on an intentional walk and scored, and Waterbury was hit by a pitch and scored a run. Jacobs sacrificed, and both runners scored on an error. Brett Stolpe walked for a bases-loaded situation with only one out but two fly outs ended the frame.
The Red Sox broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning helped by two Rebels’ errors. The Red Sox next scored in the seventh with a single run.
Akron-Westfield alumnus Derek Appley, playing third base for the Red Sox, reached base three times: on a fielder’s choice, an error and a walk, and scored a run. He plays for Morningside College.
The Rebels got one run back in the fifth as Bohlmann singled and later scored. Brown walked as did Adam Loutsch and Jared Kirkeby’s ground out scored Bohlmann for an 8-4 deficit.
Waterbury doubled and scored on a fly out by Bohlmann in the eighth inning for the Rebels’ final run.

Waterbury was 2-for-3, reached on an error, and scored three runs.
Jacobs was 1-for-4.
Bohlmann was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Brown was 2-for-3 with two singles.
Adam Loutsch reached on an error and a walk.
Blaze Hansen, the starting pitcher, walked and was hit by a pitch.
The Rebels faced Crofton at Sargent Field July 16 in a rescheduled game.
The district tournament is in Larchwood July 24 – 31.
The state tournament is in Sioux Falls, S.D., Aug. 7 – 18.
