West Sioux Elementary School and Ireton Elementary School have had busy mornings this summer as the school district continues its Summer Nutritional Program, “Don’t Rock the Boat, Make Healthy Choices.”
Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. and lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at both schools.
“We’ve had a pretty good turnout,” said West Sioux summer cook Zena Von Hagel. “One day we had 318 for pizza and another 280 for popcorn chicken.”
“It’s a good program for the kids,” said cook Pam Bockelman.
Prices are $3.50 for lunch for adults and $2 for breakfast. Kids ages one to 18 eat for free. The school district receives federal funds plus got a Hawarden Community Foundation grant.
The summer nutritional program’s last day is July 26. On Aug. 15 school starts again for the 2013-2014 school year.
