There are four girls and four boys in The Akron Hometowner coverage area competing in this year’s Plymouth County Fair Royalty Contest.
There are a total of seven king contenders and 14 queen candidates.
The King & Queen Crowning will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 24 at the Pymouth County Fairgrounds’ Pioneer Village.

• Hannah Koele, daughter
The 16-year-old is sponsored by the Akron-Westfield FFA.
She enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing volleyball and basketball and participating in FFA events and activities.
Koele has attained an overall 3.8 grade point average at Akron-Westfield Community School and is ranked 12th overall as she enters her junior year. She participates in A-W FFA, Concert Choir, Large Group Speech, basketball and volleyball.
Koele has received several FFA honors, including her FFA Greenhand and Chapter degrees as well as district and state achievement awards. She also has received awards at state Large Group Speech and Large and Small Group Vocal Music Contests.
Kriener, 16, is sponsored by the Akron-Westfield FFA. She is a junior at Akron-Westfield Community School. She is involved in FFA, volleyball, Danz Squad, track, choir, jazz choir, plays, Lakeside Lab, and Individual Events and Large Group Speech activities.
Kriener has received the FFA Star Greenahnd Award and serves as the A-W FFA Chapter’s reporter. She has also competed at the district and state level of FFA, dance and speech She serves as a captain on the Danz Squad.
She enjoys riding horses, painting, dancing and helping on the farm.
The 16-year-old is sponsored by the Johnson Juniors 4-H Club. She is a senior at Akron-Westfield Community School. She is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in Lakeside Lab, A-W choirs, Jazz Choir “Groove It or Lose It” group, Individual Events and Large Group Speech, the Johnson Juniors 4-H Club and A-W FFA.
Meerdink has received numerous honors, including All-State in both Large Group and Individual Events Speech, the FFA Greenhand and Chapter Degrees, and achieved the War Eagle Conference’s Top 5 Percent of Class three consecutive years. She serves as a drum majorette and section leader in band, is the FFA chapter president and a past 4-H Club president. She has also received awards in vocal duets and FFA competitions at the district and state levels. Meerdink accepted and attended a high school diatom class and attended the FFA Washington Leadership Conference.
Her interests include archery, quilting, singing, reading, bird identification and watching, and becoming a better actress.
The 18-year-old is sponsored by the Portland Preston Pillars Pride 4-H Club.
O’Byrne is a 2013 graduate of Akron-Westfield Community School where she participated in Large Group and Individual Events Speech and A-W FFA. She also completed an internship with a veterinarian for one semester and volunteered with the 4-H Clover Kids group at A-W.
O’Byrne has won numerous honors and achieved much including collegiate scholarships, speech, varisty track and FFA awards. She served as the FFA secretary and reporter, her 4-H club’s president and secretary, and was a FFA Washington Leadership Conference.
O’Byrne loves to read, write, be active creatively, teach Clover Kids and be active in 4-H and FFA.
The 17-year-old is sponsored by the Akron-Westfield FFA.
He is a senior at A-W Community School where he is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in speech, baseball, golf, football and basketball. He is also a member of the 4-H County Council and St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Foley has earned several honors, including the FFA Greenhand and Chapter degrees, was an Iowa Winter Games medalist and state participant in Speech.
He enjoys fishing, hunting and trapshooting.
The 16-year-old is sponsored by the A-W FFA.
Foley is a junior at A-W Community School where he participates in Large Group Speech, choir, jazz choir and FFA. He is a member of the Johnson Juniors 4-H Club.
Foley has won numerous awards, including the FFA Greenhand and Chapter degrees. He has also received Grand Champion and Reserve Champion honors in 4-H, Speech awards and choir awards.
Foley has served as a FFA chapter officer. He enjoys hunting, fishing, working outside, exploring our creek, snowmobiling, four wheeling and motorcycling.
The 17-year-old is a sponsored by the Johnson Juniors 4-H Club.
Hoffman is a senior at A-W Community School where he is on the Honor Roll and participates in football and the Community Service Day. He also lettered in football.
Hoffman has also won numerous Grand Champion and Reserve Champion honors plus won Sheep Showmanship Awards.
He enjoys weight lifting, being outdoors and being with friends and family.
The 16-year-old is sponsored by the Grant Little Giants 4-H Club.
Barker attends Le Mars Community High School where he participates in String Orchestra, Symphony, Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Crimson & Black, Chamber Choir, Men’s Choir, Thespians and Spanish Club. He has been on the Honor Roll for four semesters.
He is a member of the Grant Little Giants 4-H Club and participates in his Church’s Youth Group, Praise Band, D-Groups, Mission Trips and Mission Conference Video Skits. He has served as a Vacation Bible School helper and Awana listener.
Barker has won awards, including Large Group All-State Speech, 24 Division I music ratings, music letter and star; two years State Honor Orchestra, two years Northwest Iowa Honor Orchestra, Sioux City Youth Symphony and two years Northwest Iowa Honor Band.
Barker enjoys music, playing cello, piano, marimba, snare and drum set and singing. He also enjoys woodworking and making movies.
