Courtney Waterbury of Akron finished as the South Dakota State Champion in the Softball Throw in a Hersey Track & Field Meet, held June 22 at Spearfish, S.D.
Waterbury’s best throw was for 160 feet.
“We found out today (July 9) that she did not make nationals in Pennsylvania, finishing second in an eight-state region. But it was an awesome meet. We had a blast,” said Courtney’s dad, Randy.
Throwers had to cope with a rainy day and also had to closely watch a foot fault line before they threw.
Waterbury won her region at Sioux Falls, S.D. to qualify for Spearfish, held at the campus of Black Hills State University. Courtney, an eighth grader next month when school begins, was accompanied by parents Joanne and Randy.
“She is determined to make nationals next year. The girl who beat her is an eighth grader,” said Randy, who added it was great to meet many great families.
Waterbury is on the Akron-Westfield Middle School track and field team, softball squad and volleyball contingent.
