Salker places twice at NWC hoops camp

Northwestern College hosted the first of its two girls’ basketball camps July 8 – 11 at the Bultman Center and Rowenhorst Student Center at the Orange City campus.

Camp director and head women’s basketball Coach Chris Yaw, Assistant Coach Deb Remmerde-Leusink, along with current players coached more than 130 girls in basketball skills, drills, contests and games. Dana Weerheim, a sophomore for the Red Raiders in 2013-2014, is a West Sioux alumnus.

Award winners included Samantha Salker of Ireton, who placed second in the eighth grade division in free throws. Salker was also second in the Knockout contest. Ashtyn Verbeek of Sioux Center won both contests.

Other contest winners were:

Sixth/Seventh Grades

Hot Shot: Sierra Smith of Ellsworth, Minn.; and second place, Madison Dreckman of Le Mars.

In the One on One contest, Dreckman won first place and Courtney Kellenberger of Sioux Center and Abby Postma of Rock Valley tied for second.

In the Knockout Contest Abby Wisecup of Sergeant Bluff won first, and Kellenberger took second.

Eighth Grade

For eighth graders, the Hot Shot winner was Verbeek and Brooklyn Van Oort of Rock Valley was second.

In One On One Verbeek took first and Peyton Wingert of Dakota Dunes, S.D. won second.

For the Knockout contest the winner was Erika Feenstra of Hull with Katie TeGrotenhuis of Sioux Center taking second place.
