Errors plagued and mistakes hindered the ball game at Fort Dodge in the first round of the Class 1A Softball State semifinals.
Akron-Westfield girls were lucky to come out of it alive and win the game, 9-7 against the Janesville Wildcats.
A-W scored one run in the second inning. Dana Hedlund and Katie Johnson both got on base, and Haley Coyle sacrificed to score Dana Hedlund. A-W gave a run back in the bottom of the second inning to tie it up at one.
In the third inning, A-W scored two runs as Jaclyn Smith singled and came into play. Smith made a great slide into home plate to score.
In the fourth inning, A-W scored four runs. Jordan Hansen doubled to left field. Tindall bunted and Jordan got caught in a run down. Desi Oltmanns stood at third, and Jordan was in no-man’s land but a bad throw allowed Hansen to score.
In the bottom of the fourth, Janesville came back to score three. A-W had many mental mistakes as Janesville sent eight batters to the plate.
The Westerners scored one run in the seventh inning and held off Janesville, who scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
It was an odd game because A-W had three runners get thrown out at third, plus they committed five errors. Kortney Hedlund made a great fielding play in the fifth inning of the game but the fielding gem of the morning was made by Ryleigh Schnell for the last out of the game. The hard-hit ground ball went to Schnell’s left. Schnell dove for the ball, fielded it, rolled over, came up throwing, and got the runner out by a whisker at first base.
A-W got out of the game by the hair on their chinny-chin-chin. A-W did not play well but won 9-7.
Leading hitters for A-W were Jaclyn Smith, Jordan Hansen, and Sarah Schroeder.
A-W now plays again Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. in the semifinals in Fort Dodge.
