Akron-Westfield fifth and sixth grade youth football team followed in the footsteps of the varsity squad by scoring the winning touchdown in the final minute this week.
The younger Westerners did it with only 4.9 seconds left as Jacob Roberts snuck in from one yard out to down West Sioux No. 2 by a 20-16 score in Hawarden on Saturday. The big Westerners had edged Woodbury Central 27-22, scoring with 34 seconds left the night before.
The young Westerners and Falcons clashed in two games in a chilly Saturday morning at West Sioux. The Falcons rang their victory bell in the third and fourth grade game as their No. 2 team downed A-W No. 1, 38-0. It was the winning team’s first chance to ring the bell at home but it took the whole team to ring it. Carson Lynott led the ground game. Brady Lynott also was a big factor as was Steckelburg. The West Sioux defense was stellar.
The second game was the thriller as Antwon Mora had scored on a one-yard run for an 16-12 West Sioux lead and Zach Steckelberg added a two-point conversion for an 18-12 home team lead. Mora also had a 50-yard run following a turnover with 7:30 left.
A-W had an early lead in the first quarter and led 12-0 when Roberts scored the first of his two touchdowns.
It was a back-and-forth game with both defenses up to the challenge.
“We love game day,” said A-W coach Kevin Anderson.
A-W was 2-1 record after the win.
Both programs hold practices two nights a week in the six-week season which ends Oct. 3. WS hosted two games again Sept. 21.
Just like Friday night sometimes Saturday morning games can be real barn-burners too. Other teams they play are from Gehlen Catholic, Orange City and Sioux Center.
