A-W rallies for JV win against WS

Akron-Westfield Junior Varsity football team had a 1-1 record after the first two games.

A-W beat West Sioux 34-14 Sept. 9.

Cal Eskra had 15 carries rushing for 98 yards and one touchdown for the Westerners. He was 5-for-9 passing for 141 yards and three touchdowns.

Dylan Irizarry had 12 carries for 9 yards rushing and one touchdown. He also had three receptions for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

Joel Brenner had two receptions for 61 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense Matt Toben led with nine tackles; Tanner Coyle and Seth Kleme had five each; Spenser Wardrip and Andy Bowman both had four.

West Sioux took a 14-0 lead but the Westerners scored the next 34 points.

Eslra completed a TD pass to Irizarry for 41 yards and a two-point conversion made it 14-8 Falcons. Eskra completed a 15-yard TD pass to Irizarry and a two-point conversion gave A-W a 16-14 lead.

Eskra ran it in from two yards out but the two-point try was no good for a 22-14 A-W lead.

Eskra competed a 41-yard TD pass to Brenner for a 28-14 lead with the two-point conversion no good.

Irizarry completed the scoring with a 24-yard touchdown run but the two-point conversion was not good.

A-W vs. Woodbury Central

Woodbury Central beat A-W 12-6 on a 75-yard touchdown pass with 29 seconds left in the season opener Sept. 3.

Irizarry had 10 carries for 105 yards with a touchdown run of 45 yards for the Westerners. Eskra had 11 carries for 26 yards and was 2-for-6 passing for 11 yards. Zach Bosse added three carries for 18 yards.

Coyle led the Westerners’ defensively with seven tackles. Toben had five; Wardrip had five tackles and one sack; Montana Jackson, Bosse and Brenner had four tackles each. Irizarry had four tackles and one interception. Alex Wilken contributed three tackles and one interception. Bowman had three tackles.
