Hawarden and area shoppers are going about their business of buying groceries but have noticed some items have moved to a new location at Sunshine Foods.

That is because the store is undergoing a transformation with a 4,000 square feet addition.

PR Construction of Ireton has been working on the site since spring when Sunshine owners took over the former Fiesta Foods store.

“People of Hawarden and the surrounding area have been great during the construction,” said Sunshine Foods manager Darin Hill.

This Monday, bathrooms were renovated. In previous weeks, new frozen food sections and a new produce section have been installed. Also, there is additional parking. There is a new dairy area. A new processed meat case and produce cases are planned.

A re-grand opening is expected to be scheduled when things are up and running soon.

“We’re shooting for Nov. 1,” said Hill of the addition completion date.

Hill was named manager when former Fiesta Foods manager Dan Hamik retired in April.

“We’re thankful for Sunshine and its investment in the community. They’ve worked hard to get the addition done. Like the street project, it takes a lot of patience, but it is great when it is finished,” said Hawarden Mayor Ric Porter.

Affiliated Foods of Norfolk, Neb., is the Sunshine Foods’ supplier. Sunshine Foods is part of a 15-store chain of area stores in Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota.
