Akron Westfield played host to the Alta-Aurelia Warriors on Friday, Oct. 11. It started out as a nice warm night with strong winds out of the south. We proved to be excellent hosts as the Warriors pounded the Westerners, 21-6.
The two teams sparred the first quarter before A-A started a drive on their own 10-yard line. Staying on the ground, the Warriors marched 90 yards, using 16 plays before Bryce Radke scored from two yards out. The Warriors led 7-0 and never looked back.
A-W got on the board by moving 65 yards, using eight plays as Sam Mace went off tackle for 22 yards. He closed it up to 7-6.
A-A started their next drive on the A-W 48-yard line. A-A covered the 48 yards in five plays as Mike Stender scored from a yard out. That made the score 14-6 in favor of the Warriors at half-time.
Early in the third quarter, A-W had the ball on their own 38. A-W had a good drive going to the A-A 22-yard line. A-W fumbled and A-A jumped on the ball.
A-W forced the Warriors to punt, putting the ball on A-W’s eight-yard line. A-W moved the ball fairly well but the drive bogged down in Warrior territory.
The Warriors took over the ball at their own 33 but were forced to punt. A-W later went to the air, only to have it picked off and the ball returned to A-W’s 28.
With the clock winding down, A-A’s Stender scored on a 21 yard run to make the final score, Alta-Aurelia 21, A-W 6.
In this game, we definitely got beat on the line of scrimmage. A-A ran a lot of misdirection, inside reverses and counters. They maintained excellent ball control.
It was not a very good performance, however. Cody Bosse claimed 17 tackles for A-W while Sam Mace and John Wolthuizen each had seven. For all practical purposes, the playoffs look like a dream.
