About 2:30 p.m., Oct. 18, Akron and Alcester firefighters were called to rural Union County, S.D., to fight a corn field fire. Apparently, a John Deere combine had hit a rock, sparking the field fire as the operator drove down the end row along 308th Street between 481st and 482nd Avenues. Akron firefighters (l-r:) Bob Popken, Brian Tillman and David Irizarry were putting out the fire in the ditch area while out in the field were Alcester firefighters in their red grass rig (left) and Akron firefighters in their white grass rig (right). The field is owned by Jimmy Johnson and was being custom harvested. The custom harvesters had just come from another field about five miles away. They told The Akron Hometowner corn had been testing 18 to 22 percent moisture with yields of 160 to 170 bushels per acre in the area.
