The West Lyon Wildcats were the visitors, and I, for one, was glad to see them go home. The Wildcats easily won, 42-6 as they ran wild in the first half.
The “cats” put 42 points on the board in the first 17 minutes played. In the first half alone, they amassed 349 yards rushing while holding the Westerners to a minus 13. Akron-Westfield did not cross the mid-field strip until the third quarter.
To best describe West Lyon is to say they are big, fast and very talented.
Kaleb Heyer, Kyle Groeneweg and Brandon Snyder do the leg work and they do it very well.
It took the Wildcats exactly a minute-and-a-half to get on the board. It was a sign of things to come. A minute-and-a-half later, WL scored their second touchdown. Snyder ran in from a yard out at the two minute mark in the first quarter to make it 14-0. Groeneweg scored on a one-yard run and then on a 28-yard run early in the second quarter to add it to 28-0.
WL was very efficient with their use of the clock. They only had the ball for 14 minutes in the game. They went 63 yards in seven plays, 57 yards in five plays. 60 yards in eight plays, 41 in five plays, 37 in two and 41 yards in two.
The mercy rule came into effect at half-time and also using the running clock. A-W got on the board when Devon Myers scored on an eight-yard run late in the fourth quarter to avert the shutout.
Kudos to coach Jay Rozeboom and his Wildcats. Not only are they a very good team, but he played his reserves most of the second half. A-W didn’t quit at any time and tried to the best of their ability. Defensively A-W was again led by Cody Bosse and Kevin Carlson. We were just out-manned, out-gunned and over-powered by WL.
