A-W wins first regional volleyball clash

Akron-Westfield’s volleyball team swept Remsen Union, 3-0 for a Class 1A regional tournament win at home Oct. 22.

The Lady Westerners prevailed by set scores of 25-14, 25-11 and 25-13.

“We were surprised by their blocking in the First Set but made adjustments and kept swinging,” said A-W Co-coach Inglish Hartwig. “We had a lot of kills and hit the ball well.”

“Jordan Hansen had an outstanding match at libero and showed why she is first team All-War Eagle Conference,” she said. “Bethany Eastman led with 11 kills.”

“We’re very excited to be in the second round of the regional,” said Hartwig.

A-W totaled 37 kills for the night. In addition to Eastman’s kills, Kayla Tindall had eight; Sarah Schroeder, six; and Cali Westergard, five.

Three A-W players had double figures for digs. Kortney Hedlund had 16; Hansen, 12; and Dana Hedlund, 11. Bailey Davis added eight digs.

Dana Hedlund had 28 of the team’s 31 assists.

Ann Hedlund contributed 18-of-18 serving with three aces; and Kortney Hedlund was 5-of-7 serving with five aces.

A-W was 59-of-63 serving for 0.937 percent with 10 aces.

First Set

The Rockets led 4-2 early on in the First Set but Eastman led the Lady Westerners along with Dana Hedlund, Schroeder and Westergard who all had kills for a 7-4 lead. A-W gained a 10-5 lead on an Ann Hedlund ace serve and took control with a 14-7 margin. A-W led 17-12 when Kortney Hedlund had three straight aces.

Second Set

A-W took command in the Second Set and zoomed to a 16-4 lead and was never in trouble. Ann Hedlund had another ace in a three-point run and Tindall then finished off the set.

Third Set

The Third Set was a little more competitive as RU trailed 8-6. But, A-W opened up an 11-6 lead and led 13-7 with Hansen serving. The lead grew to 20-10 but the Rockets made one more rally, cutting it to 20-13. A-W called timeout then finished off the win with four Ann Hedlund serving points.

It was the second time A-W had downed the Rockets this season

Eastman had 11 kills and one assist.

Hansen had two kills, 12 digs and 7-of-7 serving.

Ann Hedlund had five digs and 18-of-18 serving with three aces.

Dana Hedlund had one kill, 28 assists, 11 digs and 8-of-8 serving.

Kortney Hedlund had four kills, 16 digs and 5-of-7 serving with five aces.

Desi Oltmanns had one assist and three digs.

Davis had eight digs.

Schroeder had six kills, four digs, one total block and 13-of-15 serving with one ace.

Tindall had eight kills, one assist, four digs and 8-of-8 serving with one ace.

Westergard had five kills.

Overall, A-W had 37 kills, 31 assists, 63 digs, one total block and 59-of-63 serving, 0.937 percent, with 10 aces.

Class 1A regional

The Lady Westerners hosted the second round of the regional, against Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn of Marcus, Oct. 29 (after press deadline).

If A-W won Tuesday, the girls would play the George-Little Rock vs. Central Lyon winner at Central Lyon of Rock Rapids at 7 p.m., Nov. 1. Central Lyon of Rock Rapids upset Trinity Christian of Hull, 3-1 in the first round and George-Little Rock upset West Sioux 3-0 in the first round. MMC advanced in the first round with a 3-2 win over Remsen-St.Mary’s.

The regional final is 7 p.m., Nov. 6 at George-Little Rock in George.
