Katherine Oleson of Akron, formerly of Kingsley, Iowa, passed away Sunday, November 17, 2013, at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Private family graveside services will be held in the Greenwood Cemetery in Pierson, Iowa. Reverend Roger Kurtenbach will officiate. Visitation with the family present will be from 10:00 a.m. until noon on Saturday, November 23 at the Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Katherine Fern LaPora was born August 23, 1921, in Knapp, Wisconsin, the daughter of Edward and Katherine (Downhouer) LaPora. She attended school in Salix, IA, and later her family moved to Kingsley where she attended school. It was at Kingsley where she met her future husband, Donald W. Oleson.

They were united in marriage on March 23, 1941, in Orange City, IA. They farmed for many years in the Kingsley area at the family Century farm. After retiring, they moved to Royal, Iowa. Upon her husband’s death, Katherine moved to the Floyd Valley Apartments in Le Mars in 2004. In 2009, she moved to assisted living in Akron and later to the Akron Care Center.

Katherine enjoyed making ceramics gifts for her family. She also enjoyed shopping and visiting with friends. But most of all, she loved the times spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter: Dorine (John) Bredvick of Chetek, WI; a son: Dennis (Dottie) Oleson of Akron; a son: Kenneth Oleson of Pierson, IA; a son: Bill Oleson of Sioux City; 7 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; and a sister in law: Ellie LaPora of Divide, CO.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald; 6 brothers: Edward, Charles, John, LaVern, Loren, and Gary; a sister: Helen; and daughter in law: Betty Oleson.

The family is particularly grateful for wonderful love and care she received from the nurses and staff of the Akron Care Center.
