After volunteers poured concrete for the new four-square game area at West Sioux Elementary School, students had some fun at the new site.

Students had a chance to place their hand in the new concrete Nov. 14. The concrete is near the basketball courts, away from the street near the elementary building.

“It’s a lot safer for the students and more efficient for the teachers. They don’t have to stop the game to tell students it’s safe to get a ball,” said teacher Tiffany Millikan.

Students enthusiastically explained the game of bouncing one ball from one corner to another.

Koopman’s Concrete of Ireton provided the concrete and labor for the work earlier with volunteers. Students had been fundraising for the project, especially at recent Parent-Teacher Conferences and gained support from Hawarden banks, said Millikan.

Many students, parents and community members came together and raised enough money to cover the costs, said teachers Tiffany Millikan and Mollie Koopmans, who were in charge of the project.
