WS wrestlers finish 3rd at WEC meet

Led by three individual weight class champions the West Sioux wrestling squad earned a solid third place showing of five teams at the War Eagle Conference (WEC) wrestling tournament held at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in Hartley.

The Falcons totaled 184.5 points, behind champion Hinton’s 195 points and Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn of Marcus, who had 190.5.

Jose Montes posted a 4-0 record to win the 113 pound weight class for 24.5 team points.

Also crowned champion at the end of the tournament was Johnny Duenas of the Falcons at 132 pounds.

In the upper-weights WS’s Ricardo Rodriquez had two wins by pin and one by major decision along with a bye round for a 4-0 tournament record and 25 team points at 220 pounds.

A look at how the champions gained their accomplishment for the Falcons:

Montes’ route to the title included a bye in the first round; beat Joseph Rivera of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (HMS) of Hartley with a 7-3 major decision; had a win by injury default by Lucas Vondrak of Hinton; won by technical fall over Skyler Briggs of Akron-Westfield, 15-0.

Duenas won by pin over Austin Robinson of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn (MMC) of Marcus in a pin in 5:10; won by pin over Brandon Dau of HMS in 1:31; won by a 12-5 decision over Sebastian Berg of Akron-Westfield; and beat Tristan Thompson of Hinton in a pin in 1:36.

Rodriquez opened with a first round bye; then beat Adam Schwebach of MMC in a pin in 0:52; beat Trevor Hansen of A-W in a 13-3 major decision; and beat D.J. Lode of HMS, in a pin in one minute.

The Falcons also had several second place finishes.

Misael Topete placed second at 120 pounds and earned 20 team points. Misael Topete won by pin in 4:44 over Michael Jacobson of MMC; Misael Topete beat Zac Eye of A-W by pin in 1:02; Skyler Richter of Hinton beat Misael Topete by a pin in 1:58; Misael Topete ended on a bright note with a win by pin over Norman Schirmer of HMS i n 2:50.

Antonio Pleitez was second for the Falcons at 145 pounds for 20 team points with two wins by pins. Pleitez won by pin over Payton Gibbons of HMS in 2:34; Pleitez won by pin over Mark Peters of MMC in 3:28. Pleitez also beat Jacob Vondrak of Hinton in a 7-3 decision and had a bye in the final round.

Adrian Topete placed third for West Sioux with a 2-2 tournament record and scored 13.5 team points. Cole Mills of Hinton beat Adrian Topete by a 7-1 decision; Adrian Topete beat Colton Younie of HMS by a technical fall, 15-0; Adrian Topete lost to Ben McDaniel of MMC, by a 4-0 decision and won by a bye round.

Luis Ortiz was third for WS at 170 pounds. Ortiz had a first and fifth round byes, and lost to Michael Dau of HMS in an 8-3 decision; lost to Jacob Leutsche of MMC in a pin in 1:42.

Jonathon Boyle took third place with a 2-2 record and gained 14 team points at 182 pounds. Boyle lost to Montana Jackson of Akron-Westfield in a pin in 0:19; Boyle had two rounds of byes; and Alec Wodtke beat Boyle in a pin in 0:58.

Ricardo Topete brought home a third place finish at 285 pounds and contributed 14 team points. Connor Kuchel of HMS beat Ricardo Topete by a pin in 1:43; Tyler Schuck of MMC beat Ricardo Topete in a pin in 5:22. Ricardo Topete bounced back with two wins, over Gage Tomlinson of Akron-Westfield by pin in 0:50; and beat Bradley Young of Hinton by a pin in 0:59.

Other West Sioux results

At 152 pounds Eddie Armenta placed fourth with a 1-3 record and earned 7.5 points. Armenta beat Matthew Peck of MMC, 18-3 technical fall; Dakota Drenth of HMS beat Armenta by a pin in 1:32; Daniel Bishop of Hinton beat Armenta; beat Armenta by a pin in 4:36; and Dylan Irizarry of Akron-Westfield beat Armenta in a pin in 1:16.

Alex Hernandez was 1-3 record and earned eighth points with a fourth-place showing at 160 pounds. Keegan Erwin of HMS beat Hernandez by an 8-5 decision; after a bye round, Jacob Bergman of Akron-Westfield beat Hernandez in a pin in 0:43; Conner Holmes of MMC beat Hernandez due to an injury default.

At 138 pounds, Cody Chester was 0-4 record. Derek Erdman of MMC beat Chester by a pin in 0:38; Dakota Goodvin of HMS beat Chester by a pin in 1:31; Taylor Schroeder of Hinton beat Chester by a pin in 3:50; and Dylan Blinde of Akron-Westfield beat Chester in a pin in 2:22.

Team scores from the WEC meet: Hinton, 195 points; Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, 190.5; West Sioux, 184.5; Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, 169; and Akron-Westfield, 133.
