Runner-up effort leads WS wrestlers at meet

West Sioux’s Jose Montes made it to the championship round of the 113 pound weight class at the Nighthawk Invitational Meet hosted by Boyden Hull-Rock Valley in Rock Valley Jan. 18.

Montes clashed with Samuel Klarenbeek of the home team and the match was one of the most exciting of the day. Klarenbeek of BH-RV won in a sudden victory time to improve to 23-1 record, by a 3-2 score. Montes has over 30 wins this season as the state qualifier of last year was at a 33-10 record. He gained 20 team points for the Falcons Saturday. Montes, in earlier rounds, won by pin over Tommy Wiedauar of Western Christian and Unity Christian (combined for wrestling) in a time of 2:49; he beat Michael Jacobson of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn in a pin in 4:32 to reach the final.

Misael Topete, at 120 pounds, placed fifth for the Falcons and had six team points. He lost to Ben McDaniel of MMC, in a pin in 4:33; he beat Ethan Pavelko of Worthington, 8-3; beat Zac Eyer of Akron-Westfield, 11-6.

Cody Chester of WS placed sixth at 126 pounds and scored three team points. He lost to Efrain Anzua of MOC-Floyd Valley of Orange City, in a fall in 1:03; had a bye in the next round; lost to Omari Boas of Sioux Falls, Lincoln, (S.D.), in a fall in 3:38.

Jonny Duenas opened the tournament at 138 pounds with a win over Kane Spencer of CL-G-LR, major decision, 14-3; lost to Mustafa Mohammed of Sioux Falls Lincoln, in a 12-10 decision; and had a bye in the third round. Duenas had an 18-10 record after the tournament.

At 145 pounds, West Sioux’s Antonio Pleitez lost to King Blanchette of Worthington, in a major decision, 12-2; lost to Luke Jamison of Sioux Falls Lincoln, 8-3; lost to Cody Michaelson of Worthington, in a fall in 5:42. Pleitiez had a 15-17 record after the tournament.

At 182 pounds, Luis Ortiz had a bye in the first and third rounds; he lost to Mitch Post of Western Christian-Unity Christian, in a fall in 1:54; lost to Riley Anderson of Okoboji, in a fall in 3:38.

At the other end of the weight classes, Ricardo Rodriquez of the Falcons brought home fourth place and gained 11 points for the team. Rodriquez lost to Peter Abraham of Worthington, Minn., by a 4-2 decision in the third-place bout. In earlier rounds he won by pin over Trvor Wietkamp of Western Christian-Unity Christian, in 3:19; lost to Travis Vanderstreek of Central Lyon-George-Little Rock (combined for wrestling), 5-1.

At 285 pounds, Ricardo Topete won fourth place. He beat Jonah Anderson of Akron-Westfield, in a pin in 2:12; lost to Tyler Schuck of MMC, in a pin in 1:30; lost to Trevor Wirtzema of Worthington in a 5-10 decision. Topete had a 16-14 record after the tournament.

West Sioux had a tie for ninth -place total of 51 points. MOC-Floyd Valley of Orange City won the meet with 178 points, beating Worthington, Minn.’s 169.

Dual at MMC results

In a dual meet Jan. 14, the Falcons fell to MMC, 29-25 in a War Eagle Conference battle.

Starting at 113 pounds after a double forfeit at 106, Jose Montes of West Sioux beat Jacobson, in a pin in 3:36.

At 120 pounds, Bryce Sorensen of West Sioux won by forfeit.

At 126 pounds, Mc Daniel of MMC beat Misael Topete by a pin in 5:04.

At 132 pounds, Chester, WS, won by forfeit.

At 138 pounds, Derek Erdman, MMC, won by forfeit.

At 145 pounds, Mark Peters, MMC, won by forfeit.

At 152 pounds, Pleitez won by major decision over Matthew Peck, 11-1, for a Falcons’ win.

At 160 pounds, Connor Holmes of MMC won by forfeit.

At 170 pounds, Jacob Letsche, MMC, won by forfeit.

At 182 pounds, Luis Ortiz had the final Falcons’ win of the match with an 8-2 win over Tanner Coombs.

At 195, there was a double forfeit.

At 220 pounds, Justin Theisen ,MMC, beat Ricardo Rodriquez, 3-0.

At 285 pounds Schuck, MMC, beat Ricardo Topete by pin in 1:46.

Hinton results

Hinton beat the Falcons, 41-30.

At 106 pounds, Jonathan Vollmer, Hinton won by forfeit.

At 112 pounds, Montes beat Lucas Vondrak, by pin, in 2:10.

At 120 pounds, Skylar Richter, Hinton, won by technical fall over Misael Topete, 16-1.

At 126 pounds, Cole Mills, Hinton, won by forfeit.

At 132 pounds, Chester, West Sioux, won by forfeit.

At 138 pounds, Tristan Thompson, Hinton, won by forfeit.

At 145 pounds, Pleitez, West Sioux, beat Tony Luu, Hinton, by pin in 1:00.

At 152 pounds, Daniel Bishop, Hinton, won by forfeit.

At 160 pounds, Lance Gulbronson, of Hinton, won by forfeit.

At 170 pounds, Alec Wodtke, Hinton, won by pin over Ortiz, in 5:20.

At 182 pounds and 195 pounds there were double forfeits.

At 220 pounds, Rodriquez, West Sioux, won by forfeit.

At 285 pounds, Ricardo Topete, West Sioux, beat Bradley Young, in a pin in 1:40.

The Falcons are at the Kingsley-Pierson tournament next in Kingsley, starting at 10 a.m., Feb. 1.
