On Nov. 24, 2013, Plymouth County 4-H’ers, parents, leaders, and volunteers were recognized for their hard work, dedication, and support of 4-H.
The awards program represents the conclusion of the 4-H project year and an opportunity to honor those involved in Plymouth County’s 4-H program, which according to County Program and Youth Coordinator Ann Schoenrock, is ranked fifth in the state for enrollment.
Throughout the year, members work on citizenship, leadership, and communication in specific project areas. By completing the qualifications, they can then earn Bronze, Silver, and Gold discs to add to their 4-H plaque to commemorate their 4-H accomplishments.
Members can also receive an Outstanding Junior, Intermediate, or Senior Awards; these nominations are made by the club leaders. Outstanding Junior Award winners included: Naomi Kinney (American Achievers), Patricia Sitzmann (America Bells), Jacob Heimgartner, Kia Nelson, Allison Ruden (Classy Clovers), Kara Albrecht, Chloe Calhoun, Jenna Cosby, Hope Frato, Claudia Probst, Addison Weber, Katie Wilken, Renae Zynda (Grant Clever Clovers), Anna Beitelspacher, Ashley Beitelspacher, Kaleb Koerselman (Grant Little Giants), Kara Pridie, McKenna Weiland (Hungerford TMT’s), Emy Benson, Rachel Bohle (Kingsley Krowners), Issac Gottsch, Lillian Kessenich, Shae Muecke, Megan Wilcoxon (Lincoln Toppers), Robert Banks, Alka Eliades, Elizabeth Kennedy, Brianna Moon (Lucky Liberty Lopers), Josie Kolbeck, Sydney Livermore, Ethan Peters (Stanton Lucky Clovers), Lilli Harpenau (Union Vikings).

Senior 4-H’ers, who are in Grades 10-12, must turn in a completed Record Book to the volunteer Evaluation Committee in order to be considered for any of the senior-level awards. Senior 4-H’ers also have the opportunity to be nominated for other special awards.
Senior Spirit Award
Senior Spirit Award honors 4-H’ers who have shown exceptional leadership and enthusiasm in 4-H. The 2013 Senior Spirit Award winners were: Jonathon Ludwig, Katie Ludwig (Fredonia Country Club), Leah Ellensohn (Grant Clever Clovers), Hannah Kessenich (Grant Little Giants), Mariah Grimm (Johnson Juniors), Andy Pratt, Sam Pratt, Sidney Riemenschneider (Kingsley Krowners), Jessica Petersen (Lincoln Toppers), Rachel Tentinger (Lucky Liberty Lopers), Nate Kessenich, Taylor Peters (Stanton Lucky Clovers).
Senior Achievement Award
Another senior award is the Achievement Sward which honors those 4-H’ers who have shown outstanding personal growth through participation in a variety of projects and programs. Achievement Award winners were: David Barker, Mitch Renken, Hannah Kessenich (Grant Little Giants), Taylor Peters (Stanton Lucky Clovers).
Senior Agriculture Award
Senior members could also receive the Agriculture Award which recognizes members who have shown personal growth through a wide variety of agricultural projects and programs. The Agriculture Award winners were: Mitch Renken and Hannah Kessenich (Grant Little Giants).
The Ak-Sar-Ben Award is given to one 4-H’er per county who is making significant progress towards maturity through service for the advancement of the 4-H program. Ak-Sar-Ben Award recipient was: Hannah Kessenich, a member of the Grant Little Giants.
I Dare You Award
The “I Dare You” Award recognizes two 4-H members who are juniors in high school.
It is awarded to the most “four-square” (head, heart, hands, and health) 4-H’er with character and leadership qualities that encourages and challenges them to lead creative and purposeful lives.
I Dare You Award recipients were: Cali Westergard (Johnson Juniors) and Taylor Peters (Stanton Lucky Clovers).
Special Adult Awards
Outside of these special senior awards, the 4-H & Youth Committee takes nominations for special adult awards. This committee then votes on a recipient for each.
This year, adults receiving these special honors included:
• 4-H Leader of the Year: Sheila Smith of the Lucky Liberty Lopers;
• 4-H Alumni: Wayne Beitelspacher and Ann Schoenrock,
• Honorary 4-H Member: Tom Galles, and
• Partner in 4-H – Drico Products, Inc., Mike and Joan Driscoll.
Leaders were also honored for their years of service.
• Silver Clover, Five Years of Service: Dave Korver (Plywood Busters), Barb Foley (Johnson Juniors), Susan Schwartz (Perry Pals), Theresa Schmid (Remsen Ramblers).
• Diamond Clover, 20 Years of Service: Lorraine DeJong (Record Keeping committee, Fair Committee)
• Emerald Clover, 25 Years of Service: Sheila Smith (Lucky Liberty Lopers, Horse Committee)
• Ruby Pin, 30 Years of Service: Tony Loutsch (Rabbit committee).
Gene Held Memorial
Another special award given is the Gene Held Memorial Photography Award.
Gene Held was a long time photographer of the grand champion exhibits at the Plymouth County Fair. After his passing, his wife, Annette, decided she would like to keep Gene’s love for photography alive by sponsoring a contest for 4-H and FFA members at the fair.
The main criteria for this picture is the picture had to be of nature taken within five miles of their home. This was the challenge the Helds gave themselves each year for their Christmas picture.
Many photos were submitted at the fair and photography judges choose one picture to receive the award.
Renae Zynda of the Grant Clever Clovers was the recipient of this cash prize and certificate from the Gene and Annette Held family.
Club Community Service
Clubs were also recognized for their community service efforts throughout the year. This year the award went to the Grant Little Giants.
County Council Inductees
