Gehlen beats WS boys

Gehlen Catholic finished as the undefeated War Eagle Conference boys basketball champions at the expense of West Sioux with a 57-34 win in Le Mars Feb. 11.

The Jays shared the Class 1A’s top ranking going into the regular season’s final week with Newell-Fonda and were 20-0 record after the win.

The Jays led the Falcons 32-14 at halftime after a 17-5 second quarter run. Blake Wiltgen and Solomon Frecking led the winners, 20-0 record, with 16 points each.

The Falcons had a 5-15 record after the loss.

“We played OK in the first quarter and it was 15-14 deficit in the second quarter before they finished the first half with a 17-0 run. I thought we did a good job against their half-court offense but did a poor job against their transition offense,” said West Sioux Boys Basketball Head Coach Jerome Hoegh.

Porter Hummel led the Falcons against Gehlen Catholic with 10 points and had four rebounds.

Dalton Waterman had eight points and four rebounds. Kezden Blankenship added seven points. Mason Ericson was the leading rebounder with six.

The Falcons finished the regular season with a 63-50 win over Akron-Westfield for a 6-15 record . Hummel had 32 points and Blankenship tallied 16 points on Feb. 14.

Waterman: 8 points, 4-of-9 all field goal attempts, 0-of-1 three-point field goal attempt, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal.
