Akron-Westfield Large Group speech students excel at state contest

At 5:00 a.m. on a snowy Saturday, Feb. 8 morning, the Akron-Westfield parking lot was alive with some 40 students boarding a bus to head for the Iowa High School Speech Association’s State large group contest in Spencer. That same bus would not return until almost 8:30 that night. It may have been a very long day, but the performances, energy, and team unity, made it an amazing day.

Speech is the only extra-curricular activity that does not compete by classes or school enrollment. These students compete with many 4A schools as well as with schools that have at least four coaches. Akron-Westfield speech students don’t seem to care. They can keep up with them stride for stride.

Coach Susan Anderson was very pleased with every group’s performances, and with a three judge panel, even those groups that ended up with an overall II rating, still had one judge give them a I rating. So every group had at least one person that thought they were worthy of a I rating. This is the first time this has happened. She is also pleased to have so many willing students participate in the large group program and reap the benefits of speech and public speaking.

The groups, their ratings, overall rating and members of these groups are as follows:
