One victory and a third-place finish were highlights for Akron-Westfield’s two Class 1A District Wrestling Meet Qualifiers, Feb. 15 at Sibley-Ocheyedan.
Freshman Skyler Briggs at 106 pounds beat Jordan Robinson of Woodbury Central of Moville by injury default after Briggs had a 6-2 lead.
Briggs had lost a technical fall battle to Skylar Solko of Alta-Aurelia, who gained the second spot at state with the 16-0 win. Briggs had a 24-17 record in his first prep season.
“I thought that the first round match was winnable. He put a great deal of time and effort into the first round match; sometimes it’s hard to come back for a second round. In the second round he was dictating tempo,” said Akron-Westfield Head Wrestling Coach Dusty Meinen.
At 138 pounds, Blinde had two losses as he was defeated by Ty Gibson of Graettinger-Terril-Ruthven-Ayrshire, by a 12-5 decision; and lost by pin to Garrett Sayler of Sibley-Ocheyedan by a pin in 0:46. Blinde, a junior, had a 31-19 record.
A-W had 10 team points at the Saturday meet, but Meinen said the future looks bright next year for Blinde and beyond for Briggs.
