It’s over: A-W boys fall to G-LR

Akron-Westfield boys’ basketball team played well against nine-win George-Little Rock for about 10 minutes but could not keep up with the Mustangs.

A-W saw the season come to an end with a 71-40 loss on Feb. 17 in the First Round of the Class 1A regional at West Sioux.

A-W’s only lead came at 6-5 on a basket by Jacob Neubrand with 4:40 left in the first quarter. Tavian Banks made it a 10-8 G-LR lead but the Mustangs then got hot and led 16-8 after one quarter due to two three-pointers.

Caleb Colt tallied for a 16-10 deficit, and the Westerners had a chance to cut it to four but committed a turnover, which sent the Mustangs to a 30-18 lead. It did not get truly out of hand until the second half of the second quarter when G-LR upped its lead to 39-18 at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, the Mustangs’ lead reached 30 points, then 35 for the continuous clock for the fourth.

Banks was A-W’s leading scorer with nine points. Jacob Neubrand added six. Kevin Carlson was the leading rebounder with six to go along with six points.

The tall Mustangs, 6-0 Austin Hayenga had 18 points; 6-0 Tanner Ver Steeg had 13 and 6-7 Jesse Koerselman had 10. They made nine three-pointers. Ver Steeg was the team’s leading scorer with 457 points on the season coming in, 21.5 points per game average; Koerselman was at 237 points on the year, 11.3 average. They had made 98 three-pointers and that continued Monday.

G-LR advanced to Boyden-Hull with a 9-13 record.

A-W concluded with a 4-18 record for the season.

Alex Foley: 2 points, 1-of-1 field goal attempt.

A-W team totals: 40 points, 17-of-46 all field goal attempts, 1-of-12 three-point field goal attempts, 5-of-7 free-throw attempts, 20 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocked shots.
