A-W girls’ golf opens with win over Jays

Akron-Westfield girls’ golf team opened the 2014 season with a 209-220 win over Gehlen Catholic at Willow Creek Golf Course in Le Mars April 7.

Dana Hedlund shot a 49; Kortney Hedlund had a 52; Jacynda Banks shot a 53 and Kayla Tindall had a 55 for the counting scores.

“It was a very respectable score considering it was at the Le Mars Golf Course,” said A-W Head Coach Todd Colt.

Girls golf team members for 2014 are Kortney Hedlund, Ryleigh Schnell, Dana Hedlund, Jacynda Banks, Katie Black, Kayla Tindall, Lexi Koele, Brandi Davis, Ann Hedlund, Kaberly Coyle and Chloe Skogman.

Boys’ Meet

Jordan Neubrand won medalist honors for the Westerners as he beat the Jays’ Dustin Kneip, 41-42 on a sudden-victory extra hole. Neubrand birdied the first extra hole.

Junior Kevin Carlson had a 45 for A-W’s other solid score.

Austin Allard won the Junior Varsity meet medalist honor with a 42.

“We just need to have other guys have good scores to be competitive with the best teams,” said Colt.

The Westerners’ golf team members are Charlie Anderson, Cameron Wahlberg, Eric Cottrell, Kelton Coyle, Jared Black, Cal Eskra, Jacob Neubrand, Tavian Banks, Kevin Carlson, Alex Foley, Austin Allard, Dylan Irizarry, Wyatt Heyl, Tyler Waterbury, Aaron Allard, Nick Schnell, Skyler Briggs, Daniel Martinsen and Tony Fountoulakis.

All golf events are co-ed dual meets unless noted:

April 17: 4:30 p.m., Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, home.

April 21: 1 p.m., West Sioux, at Hawarden Golf Course.
