Union County voter turnout: About 20 percent for Primary

Only 20.08 percent of registered Union County voters cast ballots in the June 3 Primary Election, according to Union County Auditor Carol Klumper.

Klumper’s records show a total of 10,486 on their active registered voters’ list but only 2,106 cast ballots.

According to the S.D. Secretary of State website, there were 1,314 of the 4,888 registered Republicans, 26.88 percent, who turned out to vote and 650 of the 5,577 registered Democrats and Independents voted, which was 11.66 percent.

Precinct Numbers

By individual precincts, the number of Union County voters was as follows:

• Precinct No. 1: A portion of Alcester Township east of 478th Avenue, Virginia Township and Sioux Valley Township: Active Voters include 234 Republicans, 148 Democrats, 75 Independents, one Libertarian and eight No Party Affiliation for a total of 466. However, only 93 cast ballots in the Primary — a 19.96 percent turnout.

• Precinct No. 2: Alcester City: Active registered voters are 216 Democrats, 72 Independents, 10 No Party Affiliation, and 234 Republicans for the total of 532. There were 179 ballots cast, 33.65 percent.

• Precinct No. 3: Elk Point City Wards 1 and 3, Richland Township, a portion of Elk Point Township, east of S.D. Highway 11/476th Avenue and northwest of the Dakota and Iowa Railroad: There are 390 Democrats, 192 Independents, one Libertarian, 16 No Party Affiliation and 432 Republicans for a total of 1,031 active registered voters. They cast 280 ballots, 27.16 percent.

• Precinct No. 4: Big Springs, Brule and Spink Townships. Active registered voters include one Constitution Party, 183 Democrats, 107 Independents, one Libertarian, seven No Party Affiliation, and 223 Republicans, totalling 522. But, only 115 cast ballots, 22.03 percent.

• Precinct No. 5: Beresford City Ward 1, a portion of Alcester Township west of 478th Avenue, Prairie Township and Emmet Township. Active registered voters are one Constitution Party, 247 Democrats, 120 Independents, one Libertarian, 10 No Party Affiliation, one “other,” and 302 Republicans. There were 682 who could have voted but only 132 ballots were cast, 19.35 percent.

• Precinct No. 6: Beresford City Wards 2 and 3: There are 254 Democrats, 109 Independents, one Libertarian, 11 No Party Affiliation and 397 Republicans for a total of 772 active registered voters. There were 214 ballots cast, 27.72 percent.

• Precinct No. 7: Jefferson Township and a portion of Big Sioux Township that lies north of 334th Street and west of 484th Avenue: Active registered voters include two Constitution Party, 185 Democrats, 170 Independents, 2 Libertarian, 18 No Party Affiliation, and 362 Republicans for a total of 739. Only 75 ballots were cast, 10.15 percent.

• Precinct No. 8: Elk Point City Ward 2 and the portion of Elk Point Township that lies northeast of County Road 1B and southeast of the Dakota and Iowa Railroad; and all of that part of the County within Elk Point Township south and southeast of the City of Elk Point between 476th Avenue and County Road IB: There are 165 Democrats, 106 Independents, one Libertarian, 14 No Party Affiliation, and 305 Republicans for a total of 591 active registered voters. Only 154 ballots were cast, 26.06 percent.

• Precinct No. 9: Civil Bend Township and Jefferson City: Active registered voters include 251 Democrats, 126 Independents, one Libertarian, seven No Party Affiliation and 214 Republicans for a total of 599. There were 154 ballots cast, 25.71 percent.

• Precinct No. 10: North Sioux City Wards 1 and 2: There are one Constitution Party, 316 Democrats, 232 Independents, one Libertarian, 27 No Party Affiliation, and 285 Republicans for a total of 862 active registered voters. Only 154 ballots were cast, 17.87 percent.

• Precinct No. 11: North Sioux City Wards 3 and 4, a portion of Big Sioux Township, south of 334th Street and west and northwest of Sunset Drive; all of that part of the County within Big Sioux Township east of 484th Avenue and north of Flurie Road; all of that part of the County within Big Sioux Township west and north of Shay Road and the extension of Shay Road to the Big Sioux River: Active registered voters include 285 Democrats, 299 Independents, one Libertarian, 34 No Party Affiliation, one “Other,” and 413 Republicans for a total of 1,033. Only 133 ballots were cast, 12.88 percent.

• Precinct No. 12: Dakota Dunes west of the Dakota Dunes Boulevard and a portion of Big Sioux Township that shall include all that part of the County within Big Sioux Township south of Flurie Road; all that part of the county south and east of Shay Road and the extension of Shay Road to the Big Sioux River; all of that part of the County south and east of Sunset Drive: There are 130 Democrats, 246 Independents, one Libertarian, 28 No Party Affiliation, and 622 Republicans for a total of 1,027. There were only 203 ballots cast, 19.77 percent.

• Precinct No. 13: Dakota Dunes east of the Dakota Dunes Boulevard: Active registered voters include one Constitution Party, 285 Democrats, 413 Independents, three Libertarians, 61 No Party Affiliation, two “Other” and 865 Republicans for a total of 1,630. There were 220 ballots cast, 13.50 percent.
