State-ranked Remsen-St. Mary’s pushed across the game-winning run in the seventh inning to down West Sioux 1-0 in a War Eagle Conference baseball game June 18 in Hawarden.

The Hawks were ranked fifth in Class 1A before the contest but the Falcons battled them each and every inning before falling to a 5-6 record overall after the loss.

Winning pitcher senior Matt Wesselmann of RSM doubled and was singled home by freshman Jacob Wesselmann for the game’s lone run. Matt Wesselmann struck out 11 Falcons and was one out away from a perfect game. Elliott Conover had three hits for the visitors.

The Falcons sophomore Porter Hummel singled sharply in the seventh for the only hit.

Senior Jesus Rivera matched Matt Wesselmann pitch-for-pitch and he allowed five hits, one walk and struck out four and he and his defense behind him met every challenge until the last. The Falcons had some “web gems” good defensive plays in the outfield.
