West Sioux and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn softball squads had more than the game on their minds as the two squads squared off for a War Eagle Conference clash June 21 in Hartley.

It was the third time the two teams had tried to play the game due to weather. HMS softball players came to Hawarden to assist with the sandbagging efforts June 17 and on Saturday, instead of ticket sales, funds went to Hawarden flood relief.

It was an entertaining game as the Falcons had seven hits, four walks in an 11-7 loss to the Hawks.

The contest was tied 4-4 after three innings but the home team took a 7-4 lead after four innings and added one run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. West Sioux, batting second, had two runs in the fifth and one more in the seventh inning.

“It was definitely good for confidence. The two teams matched up well,” said West Sioux Head Coach Stacy Kramer.

Rylee Negaard and Dana Schipper both had two hits for the Lady Falcons and Amanda Mace, Jenna Rehder and Negaard scored two runs. Negaard had four of the six RBIs.

HMS improved to an 8-8 record with the win. Kramer said their catcher, Jaylin Rieck, was good defensively, and on offense, she was 3-for-5 hitting with one run scored and one RBI.

West Sioux dropped to a 2-14 record overall.

“The girls have a great attitude. The games next week are all winnable games,” said Kramer.
