After the Akron-Westfield volleyball team played its season-opening matches on Aug. 22, Robyn Van Eldik made a bold statement to her players.

The sixth-year head coach was thrilled with the way they played and even went as far as saying her team is in midseason form.

Four years ago when Jerod Bruget helped start up the Akron-Westfield cross country program, he didn’t know how long it would take to get established.

Young runners joined the boys’ and girls’ teams, and, for the most part, they’ve stayed with the program throughout their entire high school careers.
